The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) prevention/education program addresses the problems of drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. Based on proven techniques, the program uses a team approach involving Club staff, peer leaders, parents and community representatives. More than simply emphasizing a "Say No" message, the program teaches young people ages 6-15 how to say no by involving them in discussion and role-playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal: to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.

We go on several field trips to give the children authentic experiences in which to practice their social skills, along with experiences which build self-esteem. We also have guest speakers who speak on many issues, including trust, self-esteem, drugs and alcohol, etc.

Any middle school student that is at risk of failing in school is referred to the student assist team. There is a variety of reasons that the student may be at risk of failing: It could be their home life; there could be physical issues mental issues; drug or alcohol use may be involved; pregnancy may be a concern; etc. The team is made up of the school counselor, school social worker, principal, school nurse, special services coordinator, and at risk teacher (if the school provides one). The students can be referred by any of the team members or any teacher. The team reviews the referral and decides what necessary action needs to be taken in order to help that student. The team follows up on each case.
