Additional Requirements

• Candidates for the MA must take a minimum of 36 credit hours

• 18 of the minimum 36 hours must be at the 600 level

• Independent Studies are restricted to six credit hours and may not, except in unusual circumstances, duplicate an existing course

Capstone Experience

• Thesis Option

  • Thesis hours (3-6 hours) may be used to fill the 36 hour requirement, but not to fill the 18 hours of 600-level courses requirement

  • The thesis option can be fulfilled by completing a scholarly thesis, a creative project, or a creative teaching project

• Exam Option

  • Students must enroll in GR698: Masters Comprehensive Exam in the semester they plan to take the exam.

  • The exam will consist of one question on research methods; one question on a close reading of poetry, fiction, drama, or nonfiction; and a self-generated question to be formulated in conjunction with the advisor.

  • Exams will be offered once in the fall, once in the spring, and once in the summer.

  • Candidates who choose the exam option must also submit a graduate paper.
