ED525 International Teaching Practicum


I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course:

Comparative study of and supervised teaching practicum in an international and multicultural setting. (3)

II. Prerequisite(s):

Completion of required techniques of teaching courses for certification, GPA of 2.5, consent of instructor.

III. Purpose or Objectives of the Course:

A. To guide students in applying principles of teaching and learning in an international and multicultural setting.
B. To enable students to demonstrate extended and/or refined teaching competencies related to the instructional process, classroom management, interpersonal relationships, and professional responsibilities.
C. To enable students to compare and contrast aspects of education and cultures in America and other countries.
D. To guide students in experiencing and appreciating other cultures, as well as differences within those cultures.

IV. Expectations of Students:

A. Demonstrate teaching competencies in the school setting.
B. Complete course assignments and readings (e.g., unit plans, lesson plans, journal).
C. Participate in seminar discussions, activities, and other field experiences.
D. Graduate students will prepare a scholarly paper on aspects of comparative education.

B. Practicum - Application of principles and processes related to 70 seminar topics

VI. Textbook(s) and/or Other Required Materials or Equipment:

A. No textbook; assigned readings will be provided prior to departure.
B. Instructional materials appropriate to unit plan development by student.
C. Graduate students will study selected readings on comparative education from required reading list prior to departure.

VII. Basis for Student Evaluation:

A. Demonstration of extended and/or refined teaching competencies as reflected in formative and summative performance assessments.
B. Satisfactory completion of course assignments and readings (e.g., unit plan, lesson plans, journal).
C. Active participation in seminar activities, discussions, and other field experiences.
D. For graduate students, satisfactory completion of the scholarly paper on aspects of comparative education.
