icos1.jpg (41692 bytes) April 1999 was Mathematics Awareness Month. In honor of this, Dr. Glenn G. Chappell of the Department of Mathematics designed a geometric structure to stand in front of B. F. Johnson Hall for part of the month.

The structure is a model of a "stellated icosahedron": a polyhedron with 60 triangular faces. It is made of 90 steel bars, each 6 feet long, and stands nearly 15 feet tall.

Members of the Math Club and other volunteers constructed the structure on April 19. It stood for the next week on the grassy area between B. F. Johnson Hall and Rhodes Hall.

Shown below are some of the stages in the construction.
